Overview

Anguilla receives the least amount of rainfall compared to the other islands of the Lesser Antilles, primarily due to its lack of mountains. Its tropical climate, on the other hand, makes it a hot destination almost year-round with only a small period of cooler temperatures, between the months of December and March. However, the sea breezes make sure that the heat of the day does not feel as intense, while there is also a muggy period from May through October. As for the hurricane season, it is more likely the island is affected by one from June to November, with the months of August through mid-October peaking the phenomenon.

Rainfall

The island’s rainfall amounts to almost 1,000 mm (40 inches) annually, with rains being quite irregular throughout the year (with low values most of the time), except for February and March, which are the driest ones (about 45mm/1.8in monthly average). Typically, the rainy season begins in August and ends around November, with very few exceptions (some years, the peak of precipitation has been in April and May). Nevertheless, the rainfall is moderate, with monthly averages between 100mm (4 in) and 130mm (5in).

As expected, the rains come in either thunderstorms or downpours (or both), which is typical for a tropical area. On some very rare occasions, especially when a hurricane or tropical depression strikes the island, the rains can be longer-lasting and heavy.

Hurricane Season

As with the rest of the West Indies, Anguilla enters the hurricane season in June and exits it around November. During this period, the danger of a hurricane or tropical storm increases, especially around August, September, and October. In the past, the island has been hit by several hurricanes, with Hurricane Irma being one of the most recent ones. Nevertheless, Anguilla has established a solid reputation for bouncing back and preparedness while it is also having supreme awareness of the threat.

Note: Travellers concerned about hurricane season are advised to get travel insurance that covers them while also checking the hurricane response policy of the selected property before confirming the booking.

4. Sunshine hours

Anguilla enjoys an average of 8 hours of sunshine per day throughout the year, with August and April showering locals and visitors with around 9 hours of sun. As for the longest days, these would be in June, with slightly over 13 hours of daylight to explore the island and feel its unbeatable vibe. The shortest days are in December, with an average of 11 hours of daylight.

Important Note: Anguilla's ultraviolet (UV) index is a bit over 13 in April, and the lowest it can get is in December (around 7.5). Any UV index reading above 11 indicates a particularly elevated risk of skin damage from exposure to the sun. For that reason, you are kindly advised to use sunscreen (SPF 30+) every two hours, even if the day is cloudy. If left unprotected, the skin can experience sunburns within no more than 10 minutes when the UV index is above 11. It is also suggested to wear UV-blocking sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, and protective clothing. Water reflections can also increase UV exposure.

Sea Temperature

If you love the sea and activities like water sports and swimming, the water is the warmest around September. The sea temperature peaks at 28oC (82oF). However, the lowest water temperature between January and April is not that bad (around 26oC / 79oF), either for swimming and relaxing by the beach or for ventures like snorkelling and scuba diving. The sea is also inviting between June and December, welcoming sun worshipers with a water temperature of above 27oC (81oF)

Wind Speed

Adrenaline seekers, especially those looking for windsurfing or kitesurfing fun, will find their heaven at Anguilla around July when it is the windiest it can be on the island. With an average wind speed of 25 km/h (15.5 mph) and an average maximum wind speed of nearly 29 kmh (17.4 mph), they can’t ask for more favourable conditions!

What to Pack for Your Anguilla Vacation

For a getaway between December and April, you will need light clothes. However, pack a sweatshirt or light jacket for the evening breezes or afternoon walks by the coastline. For visits from May through November, you will probably find a light raincoat coming in handy, as this is the season with the most frequent thunderstorms and rain showers. That aside, ensure you bring lightweight clothing and perhaps a light jacket or sweatshirt for the after-sunset hours.
